Question Solution of Chapter four of New coordinated Science- 3 rd edition Chemistry by Resemarie Gallagher

4.01. Metals and the periodic Table
Question:
Q-01.  You are given a sample of an element. Write down three clues that would tell you it was a metal?
A-01.  Three clues are given below
           1. The sample is a good conductor of heat & electricity.
          2. The sample is hard & malleable.
          3. The sample reacts with non-metal to form compound.
Q-02. Metals tend to be solid at room temperature. Name one metal that is not.
        A-02. Mercury
Q-03. Think of one way in which gold behaves:
a. like iron    b. differently from iron
A-03.  a. gold can conduct heat & electricity like iron
           b. gold is not affected by air & water but iron does.
Q-04. Look at the metals in the periodic table.
a. Pick out the one you have seen in real life, and write down their symbols.
b. Pick out three you think are named after: 1. places 2. People
A-05.  a. Iron, Symbol- Fe
           b. named after places- Francium, Americium
             Named after people- mendelevium

4.03 Group 1: the alkali metals
Question
Q-01. Name the group 1 elements and give their symbols
A-01.  Name of the group 1 elements with their symbol are given below
            Lithium- Li
           Sodium- Na
          Potassium- K
          Rubidium- Rb
         Cesium- Cs
        Francium- Fr
Q-02. What is the family name for the group elements? Why are they called that?
A-02. The family name is alkali metal for the group 1 elements.
Because alkali metals reacts vigorously with water and hydroxide ion is formed which is responsible to change the pH of the solution.
Q-03. Which best describes the group 1 metal:
a. soft or hard
b. high density or low density
c. high melting point or low melting point
d. reactive or unreactive , with water?
A-03. Group 1 metals have following properties:
         a. soft
        b. low density
        c. low melting point than any other metal
        d. too reactive with water
Q-04. a. write a word equation for the reaction of lithium with water.
b. The pH of the water changes. Why?
A-04. a. the word equation is
                    Lithium + water------> lithium hydroxide+ Hydrogen
            b. pH of the water changes due to the alkaline hydroxide ion.
Q-05. a. What forms when potassium reacts with chlorine?
            b. What color is this compound?
           c. What will you see when you dissolve it in water?
          d. Do you think the solution will conduct electricity? Give a reason for your answer.
A-05. a. potassium chloride form when potassium reacts with chlorine.
            b. the color of the potassium chloride is white.
             c. potassium chloride gives a colorless solutions when it dissolved in water.
           d. yes. The solution will conduct electricity.
Potassium chloride is made of potassium ion (k+) and chloride ion (Cl-). The solution of potassium chloride contains ion which is responsible to conduct electricity.
